Civil servant among seven nabbed in 840kg ganja seizure

GEORGE TOWN: Police say they have crippled a drug trafficking syndicate with the arrest of seven people, including a civil servant, and the seizure of 840kg of ganja worth RM2.1mil.

Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspects, aged between 24 and 29, were detained in separate raids in Penang and Perak in an operation conducted on Jan 18 and 19 by Bukit Aman's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

"During the raids, we seized 823 compressed blocks of ganja wrapped in brown packages weighing 840.729kg and worth about RM2.1mil," he told a press conference at state police headquarters here on Monday (Jan 23).

Comm Mohd Shuhaily said intelligence indicated that the syndicate, active since early last year, supplied the local drug market.

He said urine tests on all the suspects came back negative but five of them had records for drug and criminal offences.
